Asian countries maintain demand for coal in the energy sector

Contrary to the environmental policies of Western countries: Asian countries maintain demand for coal in the energy sector

Despite decarbonization efforts in developed countries, coal continues to be an important source of energy in the world, especially in Asian countries such as China, India and Indonesia.

This fossil resource continues to provide a significant portion of the energy used to generate electricity worldwide, accounting for approximately a third of the total.

Moreover, many new coal-fired power plants have come online in Asia in recent years, indicating continued growth in demand for this type of energy resource. In 2022 alone, China, India and Indonesia launched 59 GW of capacity and continued projects for an additional 131 GW, Bloomberg reports.

Head of Australian coal mining company New Hope Rob Bishop stressed that demand for coal remains strong, especially in India, and that coal will continue to play an important role in Asia’s energy sector in the near future.
