After the pact with Mauritania, Spain managed to conclude another collaboration agreement with Gambia on the control of illegal migration to the Canary Islands.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced that Spain will sign a series of partnership agreements with Gambia in order to stem the the influx of migrants from West Africa arriving in the Canary Islands.

“Our countries will sign a memorandum of understanding on circular migration. This new initiative aims to facilitate safe, orderly and regular migration that benefits both our countries and our citizens,” noted the head of the Spanish government.

Sánchez’s visit to Gambia is part of a three-day tour of West Africa, during which he hopes to strengthen bilateral relations with Mauritania, Gambia and Senegal.

These three African coastal countries have become the main departure points for migrants trying to reach the Canary Islands, where, according to the Spanish Interior Ministry, more than 22,000 people have arrived since January.

At the beginning of his visit, Sanchez has already concluded a agreement with the Mauritanian presidentMohamed Ould Ghazouaniin order to renew cooperation between the security forces of the two countries to combat migrant trafficking.
