The Southern Automobile magazine made recommendations to owners of Chinese cars regarding the installation of towing devices (towbars), emphasizing that this modification can lead to difficulties during subsequent registration with the traffic police due to legislative gaps.

The publication’s experts insist that the majority of Chinese cars sold in Russia have there is no documented possibility for towing trailer, not included in the Vehicle Type Approval (VTA). In fact, this means that the manufacturer did not provide such an option in the model’s data sheet. From the point of view of the traffic police, the installation of a tow bar is considered a design change that requires a special safety assessment.

Market expert, Andrey Golydbinconfirmed that the annex to the OTTS of Chinese cars often indicates the lack of the ability to tow a trailer.

Thus, owners will have to undergo a safety inspection, which entails additional time and financial costs. The traffic police also claim that installation of a tow bar is possible only if the requirements of technical regulations are met. Therefore, it is safer for owners of Chinese cars to refrain from this procedure in order to avoid difficulties in the subsequent registration of the vehicle.
