In May, the helicopter was returning to Iran after an event in Azerbaijan, where the new Gudaferin and Giz Galasi hydroelectric dams on the Araz (Araks) River were opened. On board the helicopter were Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, the head of the MFA Hossein Amir Abdollahian, the Imam of Tabriz Mohammad Ali al-Hashem, the head of East Azerbaijan Province Malek Rahmati, the helicopter crew and one security guard. All of them were killed.
