A 20-year-old student currently attending college was detained by police in St. Petersburg for allegedly being involved in 70 cases of cyber fraud.

Law enforcement officials established that the young man acted as a buyer on an online platform for selling goods, where he offered other users to use the “Safe Transaction” and “Delivery” services.

The suspect then sent victims phishing links to fake web resources that imitated real online platforms. After victims entered their personal information, including bank details and card codes, their accounts were debited multiple times. As a result of this, the fraudster managed to illegally obtain about 500 thousand rubles, reports Petersburg2.

Currently, a criminal case has been initiated against the young man under Part 3 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Fraud on a large scale”). He was also given a preventive measure in the form of detention pending trial.
