The doctor named the healthiest vegetable oil

Camelina oil is a unique product that is obtained not from camelina mushrooms, as it might seem, but from the ripened fruit pods of camelina sativa (Camelina sativa), a herbaceous plant from the cabbage family. Now camelina oil can be bought in many supermarkets; it costs much less than the advertised olive or flaxseed oil, although it is in no way inferior to them in benefits. Why camelina oil is good for health and how to use it correctly – an expert from the Hemotest laboratory, a gastroenterologist, told Pravda.Ru readers Ekaterina Kashukh.

The benefits and harms of camelina oil

Camelina oil is a source of healthy unsaturated fats that are well absorbed by the body and protect the heart and blood vessels. It refers to unrefined oils that are best used as a dressing.

All oils are divided into refined and unrefined. Refined oils undergo multi-stage purification, resulting in a clear liquid without natural sediment and practically odorless, less rich in nutrients. Such oils are ideal for frying: due to the fact that they are cleared of all “excess”, when heated they do not smoke or emit harmful carcinogenic substances.

Classic and well-known refined oils:

  • sunflower,
  • corn,
  • coconut

Unrefined oils are not as thoroughly refined, so they retain more nutrients and are richer in color and flavor. When heated, such oils can smoke and lose some of their beneficial properties, so they are recommended to be used raw, that is, added to salads, sauces, snacks, cereals and soups. Well-known examples of such oils, in addition to camelina:

  • olive,
  • mustard,
  • sesame,
  • flaxseed

Camelina oil contains unsaturated Omega-3 fats, which are especially beneficial for the cardiovascular system.

“First of all, camelina oil is valued for its high content of Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. They are well absorbed by the body and are involved in regulating the level of bad cholesterol in the blood, which means they help prevent heart and vascular diseases. Polyunsaturated fatty acids also ensure firmness and elasticity of the skin , strength of nails, healthy shine and density of hair. One tablespoon of this oil per day will help replenish the deficiency of healthy fatty acids,” says Ekaterina Kashukh.

Camelina oil has virtually no contraindications, but it may not be suitable for people with individual food intolerances or allergies.

“Usually, when consuming camelina oil, such people notice abdominal discomfort or the appearance of an allergic rash on the skin. If a person experiences such reactions, it is better to avoid camelina oil and replace it with another healthy unrefined product, for example, avocado or flaxseed oil. In addition, it is important remember that camelina oil is a high-calorie product. This is important to take into account for those who are watching their weight, because overuse of aromatic oil can lead to gaining extra pounds,” warns the doctor.

Camelina oil is sold in small containers because it has a short shelf life. Typically, once opened, camelina oil can be stored for no more than two months, and after the expiration date, the taste and color may change and the nutritional content may decrease, so it is best to consume it as soon as possible.
