A popular country for beach holidays among Russians is sharply increasing the tax on tourists by six times. Greece hopes to receive additional 300 million euros from tourists, and these funds will allegedly go to the Climate Change Fund.

Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced this at the 87th International Fair in Thessaloniki. Statistics show that in the first half of 2023, the number of tourists in Greece increased by 26% compared to the same period last year, and income increased by 23.9%. This is likely what prompted the Greek government to consider increasing the “accommodation tax” that tourists pay at the country’s hotels, which varies from 1 to 6 euros per night.
