Belarus demanded compensation from Russia due to the delay in the launch of the BelNPP | October 31, 2023

“According to the agreement, we raised before them (Russia—Kommersant) the issue of compensation. There is no need to hide this. There was nothing extraordinary there. But such questions were raised due to the fact that the deadlines for commissioning the station were violated, and the Russian side bears responsibility for this,” said Mr. Lukashenko (quoted by BELTA).

He added that Russia offered Belarus the sale of nuclear fuel “as for its stations” and a guarantee for a period of five years.

Earlier, the Belarusian president said that the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant has been completed and the station is “operating at full capacity.” The question of the safety of the station, according to him, comes first.

The BelNPP includes two power units with a capacity of 1.2 GW. Part of the construction of the project was covered by a Russian government loan of $10 billion; the general contractor was the company “Rosatom NPP”. The first power unit started operating in November 2020, the second in May 2023.
