Bloomberg reported a diplomatic scandal at the summit in Granada over migration | October 7, 2023

Bloomberg’s interlocutor noted that Macron and Meloni at the summit decided to hold a meeting with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on the problem of migration.

“Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez felt that this was a distraction from the official negotiations that had already been held under his leadership, and in irritation canceled a joint press conference with Sunak on Thursday,” the agency quotes the interlocutor as saying.

Journalists also learned that the European Union (EU) is worried about the large number of migrants who have come to the bloc. However, said an anonymous source in the EU diplomatic corps, European politicians are trying to avoid the topic of migration, since this issue can ruin the careers of government officials.

The agency emphasized that the new EU migration agreement is based on the concept of “mandatory solidarity.” According to it, the country can either accept a certain number of migrants or pay for their admission by other EU states.

Earlier in the day, at the EU summit in Granada, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said Poland had blocked a decision to resettle illegal migrants across Europe. Morawiecki noted that it was Poland’s position that restrained the process of forced relocation of illegal migrants. He proposed that the European Union strengthen its borders and stop social support for illegal immigrants, emphasizing that there is no social assistance for migrants in Poland.

The day before, Prime Minister Leo Varadkar noted that the new EU agreement could lead to Ireland paying money to other countries in the union rather than voluntarily accepting additional migrants.

At a meeting with journalists at the summit of European leaders in Granada, where issues of support for Ukraine, migration and the possible entry of new countries into the EU were discussed, Varadkar said that Ireland was simply not able to accept more migrants until the accommodation situation was resolved.
