Finnish scientists have identified the cause of worsening insomnia and depression in society | October 29, 2023

A number of scientific organizations in Finland: the Institute of the Environment, the Meteorological Institute, the Department of Health and Social Development, the University of Eastern Finland and the University of Helsinki, with money from the National Academy, are conducting a scientific study on the impact of climate change on the human psyche, which will last until the end of 2024.

“It is likely that sleep disorders will become more common. Symptoms may become more widespread or at least more severe. Depressive symptoms and depression may also occur more often, especially in the winter months,” Professor Timo Partonen commented to RIA Novosti on the preliminary results of the study.

He stressed that there is little information about the long-term impact of climate change on human mental health and scientists hope to obtain more data.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute previously reported that due to the increase in average annual temperatures, the seasons of the year are merging, and the difference between them is not so obvious, which is especially noticeable in southern Finland, where, in the absence of snow in winter, the season becomes like “endless November.”

Psychologist Nella Talgrenin from the Metodi specialized center believes that any depression must be fought.

It is also important to get enough sleep, communicate with loved ones and friends, reducing the feeling of isolation, increase physical activity, and if the problem is serious, seek help from a specialist, Talgrenin added.
