Study: cinema made cats angry and cold | October 31, 2023

Specialists from the digital marketing agency Evoluted conducted a study in which they found that films and cartoons in which cats play the main role spoil the image of tailed animals. About it reports Daily Mail.

The company’s experts analyzed 50 popular cats, which receive a large amount of screen time in films and cartoons. It turned out that in 60% of cases, animals were portrayed as villains. Even though cats could play good heroes, most of them are portrayed as criminals.

For example, the cat Sylvester in the American cartoon “Sylvester and Twitty: Mystery Tales” tries unsuccessfully to catch the yellow canary. A similar role of the cat is presented in the animated film “Tom and Jerry” Also in the seriesFriends“When Rachel brings home a Sphynx cat, the two heroes do not greet her very well and ask: “What the hell is this?”, “Who turned her out?”

According to the study, Siamese and Persian cats are perceived most negatively. The villains in movies are gray and black animals. For example, Salem, who turned into a cat from the television series “Sabrina the little witch”, in human form was a sorcerer. However, red tails can be seen in a positive light, like the cat from the movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”

Cats-antiheroes most often look sinister and because they are opposed to kind dogs, an example is the film “Cats vs dogs”

Commenting on the results, scientists say that the negative portrayal of cats in cinematic universes may be due to the fact that they are more independent and not so easy to manipulate. People feel less connected to these animals and tend to think negatively about them.

“Cats do not display obvious emotions or provide immediate gratification like dogs and are therefore perceived as unfriendly or unemotional,” the study authors added.

This is also due to the reaction of cats. For example, they may often hiss at dogs that get too close to them. As a result, people get the impression that cats are aggressive and dogs are good-natured, although the former are simply trying to defend themselves because they feel threatened. If the sounds were ignored, this leads to a fight between the animals.
