The river of the Kedrovaya Pad reserve is recognized as ideally clean

Directorate of Nature Reserves “Land of the Leopard” shared on VKontakte with good news to its subscribers. The main river of the oldest nature reserve in the Far East, Kedrovaya Pad, is recognized as ideally clean.

The study of the Kedrovaya River for cleanliness took place as part of a project to assess and monitor freshwater bodies. The collection of water samples and the study of local fauna was carried out by schoolchildren and students from Vladivostok and the Khasansky municipal district under the supervision of hydrobiological specialists.

Children learned how to correctly collect biological material, measure the speed of a river flow, and examined selected samples under a microscope. Among the animals found there were many stoneflies and mayflies – these insects avoid bodies of water even with slight pollution and serve as a kind of “litmus test” in determining the purity of water.

The results of the field research in Kedrovaya Pad will form the basis for the final report on monitoring freshwater sources and will be published on the websites of the project organizers. National Park employees note that the collected information about the condition of Kedrovaya is a contribution to a unified database on the condition of all freshwater sources in Primorye, which will help predict and block possible pollution.

Recently scientists discovered one of the darkest rivers in the world. It owes its color to organic waste from the jungle, washed away by rain.
