Before purchasing houseplants, you need to make sure they are safe for your pet, as many can be toxic to cats.

Here is a list of five common plants to look out for:

  1. Lilies: Lilies pose a danger to cats, even if they are simply eaten. Even the water in which the flowers are located becomes poisonous. Possible consequences include vomiting, diarrhea, appetite disturbance, kidney failure and, in extreme cases, death.
  2. Daffodils: Spring flowers are also toxic to cats if eaten. Daffodils can cause low blood pressure, vomiting, irregular heartbeat, and increased salivation. In addition, they irritate the oral cavity and upper gastrointestinal tract.
  3. Lily of the valley: This plant is completely toxic to cats. Consequences of eating may include seizures, vomiting, diarrhea and heart problems.
  4. Eucalyptus: Eucalyptus leaf oil is dangerous for cats, causing swelling of the respiratory tract and irritation of the oral mucosa.
  5. Aloe vera: This popular succulent can cause signs of poisoning in cats, such as lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea. The leaves and pulp of the plant are also dangerous.

To ensure your pet’s safety, it is recommended that you keep poisonous plants out of reach or avoid purchasing them.
