WP: Lebanon dissuades Hezbollah from participating in Hamas’s war with Israel | October 29, 2023

“We as a government say (to Hezbollah—Kommersant): ‘We cannot accept war.’ And the answer: ”We understand you.” But we also can’t survive the fall ”Hamas”,” WP quotes one of the officials as saying. The publication’s sources believe that the United States should put pressure on Israel in the context of a ground operation in the Gaza Strip, since its implementation could push Hezbollah militants into new clashes with the Israeli army.

“The same Lebanese who celebrated the Hamas invasion also criticized Hezbollah’s involvement, fearing that the images of destruction coming from the Gaza Strip would be repeated in their own country,” WP writes, citing an anti-war citizen petition Lebanon on Change.org (more than 8.7 thousand signatures).

The last conflict between the Lebanese Hezbollah and the Israeli army was in the summer of 2006 in southern Lebanon. According to the resolution of the Security Council UN, a ceasefire has been established on the border, monitored by peacekeepers from 36 countries. Since the beginning of Israel’s war with Hamas, the Lebanese side has repeatedly reported Israeli shelling of the southern regions of the country. The Israel Defense Forces also reported missiles sent from Lebanon. On October 25, it was reported that the leader of the Lebanese group Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, discussed with the leadership of Hamas and Islamic Jihad what their alliance must do to “achieve real victory.”
