Chinese mother and son reach agreement after trial

Chinese woman named Liu decided to go to court after her son, Xiaowei, withdrew all the funds from a savings account opened in his name. The account, which contained about 500 thousand yuan (approximately 6.3 million rubles), was opened by Xiaowei’s mother for future education in Europe.

At first, the savings account was in Liu’s name, but after her second marriage, the woman changed it to her son’s name to protect the funds in case of divorce. She told Xiaowei that the money was for his education and promised an additional 500 thousand yuan if he studied well. The account was managed by Liu herself, since Xiaowei was too young at the time of opening the account.

However, Xiaowei, who entered the university, decided to withdraw all funds from the account, spending 200 thousand yuan on a gift for his friend and traveling together, and transferred the remaining money to her account. As a result, the mother demanded that 300 thousand yuan be returned to her, but the son and his girlfriend refused, claiming that the money was intended for Xiaowei.

The dispute was resolved in court, where the Sichuan Magistrate Court acted as a mediator. During the proceedings, the boy realized that the funds were allocated for his education and not as a gift, while his mother realized that Xiaowei was striving for independence. As a result, they agreed to return the money to their mother, and Liu promised to continue to financially support Xiaowei, paying for his studies and providing him with monthly expenses.
