Found a way to assess the risk of stomach cancer

Researchers from Tib University have developed a method that can accurately predict the likelihood of developing stomach cancer. This is done using DNA methylation analysis and lifestyle analysis. This scientific work was published in the journal “eBioMedicine”, Gazeta.Ru reports.

Various environmental and lifestyle factors, such as tobacco and alcohol use, increase the likelihood of developing stomach cancer. In addition, infection with Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium found in the stomach, is also a key risk factor for developing this disease. H. pylori infection can cause inflammatory processes and influences gene activity by altering DNA methylation profiles.

In this new study, researchers compared biopsy samples of the stomach lining from patients, some of whom later developed stomach cancer and others who did not. The study found that specific changes in gene activity were associated with an increased risk of cancer. This was facilitated by infection with the bacterium H. pylori, and the use of tobacco and alcohol.

The researchers believe that in the future, DNA methylation profiles will be able to identify patients at high risk of developing stomach cancer. These patients will be advised to give up tobacco and alcohol and undergo regular stomach examinations to prevent tumor development.
