Many people view sex as a means of feeling good, believing that long-term abstinence can have mental and physical health consequences. However, the idea that long-term sexual abstinence necessarily leads to health problems is a matter of debate, according to a doctor Olga Ulankinaa gynecologist specializing in obstetrics.

Olga Ulankina explains that sexual abstinence in women is usually not directly related to the development of certain gynecological diseases, such as endometriosis, cysts, polyps or prolapse (prolapse of the pelvic organs). These conditions are more often associated with other factors, such as difficult births, large babies, or connective tissue abnormalities. The presence or absence of regular intimate life does not have a significant impact on these problems.

However, Olga Ulankina emphasizes that sexual intimacy can have a positive effect on the overall well-being and mood of women. Regular sexual intercourse strengthens the immune system and promotes hormone production, such as oxytocin, dopamine and serotonin, which are responsible for feelings of intimacy, joy and happiness. In addition, sex hormones released during sexual intercourse, such as estrogen and testosterone, can have beneficial effects on health, skin beauty, cardiovascular health, strength and other aspects.

In men, prolonged sexual abstinence can have more serious consequences. This can cause problems such as stagnation of prostate secretion, pain in the pelvic area, pain in the testicles and a feeling of heaviness in the groin. Regularity of sexual intercourse is important for men’s health, as it helps prevent prostatitis, vesiculitis and orchitis, and also promotes general well-being, quality sleep and a sense of satisfaction with life.

Olga Ulankina recommends masturbation as a way to reduce the negative consequences of abstinence in men. However, she emphasizes that this does not negate the benefits of sex with a loved partner.

In summary, sex, especially with a partner you love, can have a positive impact on your well-being and mood, but the idea that lack of sex automatically leads to health problems is exaggerated. Other factors such as lifestyle, stress, lack of sleep, diet and bad habits often have a more significant impact on overall health. Therefore, it is important not to look for a partner solely “for health.”

What happens to our body when there is no sex? Is abstinence as beneficial as people think it is?
