As do we we wrote it, due to the flooding of the Danube, flood protection preparedness was in effect in Budapest. We are already past the summit, and Mayor Gergely Karácsony announced new good news on his social media page.

From December 31, vehicles can use the lower quays again

– said Karácsony.

With the lowering of the water level of the Danube, it is possible for the FKF Public Cleaning Division of BKM – Budapesti Közművek Nonprofit Zrt. to start cleaning the lower quays of Buda and Pest tomorrow morning, December 30.

BKM will remove sediment and mud with more than 40 manual cleaners and more than 30 cleaning, loading and transporting machines per shift, and then clean the contaminated surfaces with high-pressure washing equipment. The works are expected to take two shifts, after their completion Budapest Közút Zrt. will remove the signs prohibiting driving down to the lower quays. After that, from the morning of December 31, both lower quays will be open again for vehicles.

The employees of the Capital Sewerage Zrt.. and Budapesti Közlekedesi Zrt. (BKV) are currently working to pump out the water from the chain bridge underpass of tram 2. After this is completed, vehicles traveling on tram line 2 will be able to use the entire route again

– explained the mayor.

Furthermore, the residents of Budapest were asked to avoid the quays until the flood and the cleaning work are completely over, due to the risk of accidents and infection.
