In Kamchatka, biologists are studying the diet of northern sea otters

“It is not so easy to find out what exactly sea otters feed on in a given water area. One of the effective ways is scatological analysis. Researchers collect sea otter excrement in places where they come ashore to rest. By using undigested fragments of crab shells, pieces of mollusk shells, teeth of sea urchins, and fish otoliths, one can determine the species that sea otters feed on in a particular place, and even the size of the prey,” the press service quotes Evgenia Volkova, a researcher at the Federal State Budgetary Institution “Kronotsky State Nature Reserve.”
