In 2023, the Russian rocket and space industry was actively working to increase the number of communications and surveillance satellites, especially in the interests of the Russian Ministry of Defense. In total, 19 space launches were carried out during the year, seven of which were successfully completed in the interests of the military department. Experts note the predominance of high-resolution optical satellites, such as Bars-M and Hrazdan, intended for mapping the earth’s surface and replacing outdated satellites.

Also of interest is Kosmos-2570, the Lotos-S1 No. 7 electronic reconnaissance apparatus, capable of operating in difficult conditions. Some Western observers have noted the craft’s unusual maneuvers, including separating other objects mid-flight.

Experts emphasize that while Russia’s space program has demonstrated success, it still lags behind the West in the field of surveillance and communications satellites. Tasks in this area remain a priority to ensure control over the rapidly changing situation in the zone of strategic military interest.
