Georgia finalizes requirements for EU candidate status

Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili announced that Georgia is in the final stages of meeting the requirements set by the European Commission to obtain candidate status for accession to the European Union. During a meeting with the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz At the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Garibashvili discussed Georgia’s progress towards European integration.

He emphasized the importance of the European Union granting candidate status to Georgia and expressed hope for Germany’s support in this process. Garibashvili also met with the State Department Advisor Derek Cholletto discuss Georgia’s efforts towards European integration.

It is worth noting that in June 2022, the leaders of the European Union granted candidate status to Moldova and Ukraine and recognized Georgia’s European perspective. The EU expressed its readiness to grant candidate status to Georgia after the country fulfills 12 specific conditions. Georgia’s path to EU membership remains an important goal for the country.
